Hydrant Flushing

The Valley City Public Works Department will be flushing hydrants in the city beginning May 11th 2021, for approximately two weeks to a month.  Water pressure may vary and residents may notice discolored water conditions during this time; however, the water will remain safe to drink.  To avoid any inconvenience, residents should check their water before doing laundry, and store water for drinking and cooking.

Construction Notice-7th Ave NW

Starting May 10th, 2021 7th Avenue W will be closed from 2nd Street SW to the intersection of 2nd Street NW. The closure will remain in effect until the corridor is reconstructed. Main Street will be closed from 8th Avenue SW to 6th Avenue SW during installation of underground utilities. Access to businesses along Main Street will be provided.
A detour route will be in effect for the duration of the Main Street closure. The Detour Route will run from 9th Avenue NW to 2nd Street NW then back to Main Street via 5th Avenue NW.
Updated maps for all road closures will be posted on the City of Valley City’s webpage https://www.valleycity.us/engineers/ when they are taking affect. If you have any questions regarding the project, please contact KLJ at (701)-845-4980.

Clean up Week

Attention Valley City Residents

City Cleanup

May 24TH through May 28th

Valley City will conduct its annual residential waste cleanup the week of May 24TH through May 28TH.  The free pickup and disposal for residential waste only.

Valley City residents are encouraged to clean up, clean off, and clean out their properties.  On your regular garbage pickup day, put all your garbage, including the extra, out in your regular pick up spot by 7:00 AM, and Valley City Public Works will pick it up.  There is no limit on the number of bags, cans, boxes, etc., and no extra charge.  We will pick up general household garbage, couches, chairs, furniture, branches and wood DO NOT BAG OR BOX BRANCHES.  Paints and liquids can be disposed of in a dry, hardened form.  Cat litter, floor dry or sawdust can be used to absorb the liquid.  Empty cans can be left out with garbage. LEFTOVER PAINT WILL BE ACCEPTED AT THE LANDFILL DURING CLEAN UP WEEK BUT MUST BE DRIED.

Separate items into piles

  • branches and tree (will be picked up the week after cleanup week)
  • household garbage
  • bricks, shingles, cement, wood products, rocks, large carpet rolls

Residents may take their appliances to Valley Recycling Center.

The following items WILL NOT be picked up:

Leaves and grass need to be taken to the collection site at the landfill at no charge.

  • Tires must be taken to the transfer station. The disposal fee cannot be charged, cash only.
  • Batteries may be taken to Valley Recycling Center.
  • Scrap metal may be taken to Valley Recycling Salvage Yard at 11481 35th ST SE  (north of Valley City landfill)

Help the garbage crews by putting the garbage into boxes, bags or cans not to exceed 32 gallons or 50 lbs.

Note:  Free disposal of grass, leaves, branches, trees, used motor oil and metal can be disposed of at the Transfer Station all year long. Metal is free for city residents not businesses.

  • This week is “Educators’ Appreciation Week”.  Thank you teachers, cooks, custodians, counselors, paraprofessionals, aides, administrators, administrative assistants and all who contribute to education in our area.  Your personal investment in our youth is greatly appreciated.

  • More and more people are our enjoying the freedom of outdoors.  Drivers, please be alert to motorcycles, bicycles, joggers and walkers.  Remember pedestrians have the right of way at crosswalks.  Thank you.
  • PLEASE, don’t text while driving.  It is terribly dangerous.
  • Thank you to our Valley City Postal Service as those folks served as “front line workers too.  We always had mail delivery.  “Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from swift completion of their appointed rounds”.

  • Last week was a time of continuing education for many of us.  Workshops were held by Missouri River Energy Services, (MRES), in Sioux Falls and the North Dakota League of Cities, (NDLC) in Bismarck.  Brenda Klein and Avis Richter were recognized for their achievements in the NDLC Leadership Training Program, congratulations.
  •  “SMOKERS”.  Will you please consider carrying a receptacle to contain cigarette butts and wrappers?  They do not decompose well and many end up in people’s yards.  You can make a difference, thank you.
  • “Everybody”.  Other refuse is strewn throughout the city and county too.  Please carry a container as per the aforementioned.  If you see something on the ground, please pick it up.  You can make a difference, thank you.
  • The Legislative Session will likely conclude this week.  Our legislators had to sort through hundreds of bills and make many tough decisions while representing citizens of North Dakota.  Thank you all for serving.
  • Last week, some COVID “front line workers” were mentioned.  An omission on my part is the National Guard.  They helped facilitate mass testing, vaccinations and whatever else was needed.  Please say “Thank you”.
  • Last Thursday Mary O’Neill from the North Dakota Forest Service provided a pruning seminar on the VCSU Campus.  “If young trees are pruned to promote good structure, they will likely remain serviceable in the landscape more years than trees that have not been structurally pruned”. https://www.ag.ndsu.edu/ndfs/programs-and-services/community-forestry

5th Ave NW Construction Notice

Construction activities on 5th Ave NW Phase 2 will resume on April 19th, 2021. Starting April 21st, 2021 5th Avenue NW will be closed from 7th Street NW to 12th Street NW. The roadway will remain open to local traffic only.
A detour route will be in effect for the duration of the closure. The detour will run from Main Street to 9th Avenue NW and then back to 5th Avenue NW via 12th Street NW.

4.19.2021 Mayor’s Message

Hi Folks,

  • THANK YOU to all people who have been “front line workers” during the battles with COVID-19.  A few occupations where people are exposed to the COVID are: clergy, healthcare, law enforcement and education.  If you meet people who serve in those or like professions, please say “thank you”.
  • “If you see someone without a smile, give him or her yours”
  • We have had people contact city employees and commissioners about issues with their neighbors.  One of the questions I try to ask is, “have you visited with your neighbor about the issue”?  Very often they have not!  Seminars on “Conflict Resolution” tell us “communication resolves conflict”.  We don’t have to be friends we just have to talk with each other.  Whenever resolution can be reached without a third party, it will be better.  If civil issues go to court,  generally both parties lose.  A friend of mine says, “The answer is usually somewhere in the middle”. Be neighborly, who knows, visiting could begin a good relationship.

  • Last week we talked about Missouri River Energy Services (MRES).  Have you thought about what our energy mix is?  Valley City’s energy is 93% Carbon Free!  Our carbon footprint has been reduced by nearly 50% since 2005.
